The European Parliament Constituencies Committee has recommended that Ireland be divided into three constituencies for future European Parliament elections. This action is a result of the number of seats being reduced from 12 to 11, to accommodate Croatia as the 28th member of the EU. There is a three seat Dublin constituency, a four seat Midlands-North-West constituency and a four seat South constituency.

2013 saw the introduction of a new Courts Bill giving rise to new changes in the Court’s regime. Dorethea Dowling, who chairs the lawyer-free Injuries Board, highlights that recent concerns have developed as these new court changes could enhance motor insurance costs throughout the country.
This new Bill will make district and circuit courts busier, leading to huge delays and greater costs for companies all round. As a result, these costs will be passed on by increased motor insurance premiums. Mrs Dowling said that ‘it seems no-one in Government has any responsibility for safeguarding the interests of car insurance consumers’.

Insurer CPP is the latest name in the mis-selling scandal to pay up to £1.3 billion sterling in compensation to customers for mis-sold credit card insurance. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) stated that approximately seven million customers who bought and renewed about 23 million policies will soon be contacted by CPP. The FCA had already issued a fine to CPP earlier in the year for £10.5 million for giving customers misleading and unclear information. Card protection insurance costs roughly £30 per year, with identity protection about £80 annually and in most cases both are optional extras.

Or will they?
The Irish government is to decide in 2014 whether or not to remove 1c and 2c coins from circulation.
During times of inflation, the value of all coins decreases with time, and so a trial is being carried out in Wexford to check if there really is a need for the small coppers. Under the trial, prices can be rounded up or down, but this will only apply to packages of goods, and not single items.
Paddy Compare can help you save more than a few coppers on your car insurance though. Our panel of specialist brokers will provide you with a great quote for your motor insurance needs, with just a single form. Get a quote today to see how much you could save.
Swinton, one of the largest insurance companies in the UK has been fined €8.5 million by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for mis-selling insurance policies. The FCA stated that Swinton had “prioritised profit” and in doing so failed to treat their customers fairly. The incidents arose from the company selling “add-ons” in the form of personal accident, home emergency and motor breakdown policies. The “add-ons” were not the problem, but the fact that the customer was not told that these policies were optional extras. Swinton has since contacted 650,000 customers and has set aside over €13 million for compensation.

Court changes are set to hike the costs of motor insurance, an expert warns. Dorothea Dowling (Injuries Board chairperson) says that legal costs will jump up as a result of the Courts Bill 2013.
The law will increase the limits for the size of awards which can be awarded in the district, circuit and high courts. This is expected to result in busier courts, huge delays and greater costs for companies – resulting in increased premiums for customers.
Increases such as these are usually out of the hands of consumers, but Paddy Compare offers a comparison service for you to find the best prices on cheap car insurance Ireland. Therefore you can be sure of finding a great deal from motor insurance specialists in Dublin, Cork, Galway and across Ireland. Try Paddy Compare today!
Have you got the latest technology gadget built into your car? Well according to a recent study by the Foundation for Highway Safety, these gadgets actually cause a real road safety concern. So much so that the Government have now recommended that automakers voluntarily limit the use of technology in new cars. The automakers argue that these devices actually increase safety as they are “hands-free”. Some of the latest systems allow drivers to use voice commands to send texts, answer calls, send emails and even update their Facebook page. Would you agree that this would take your mind off the road?

A report by RTE has found that Co. Mayo has the fewest drivers with points on their licence, whilst Co. Kildare has the most. Across the country, around 20% of drivers have penalty points and over 168000 offences were recorded last month in Dublin alone.
The Regional Quality of Life report from the Central Statistics Office compares lifestyle, housing, health, education and economic activity across Ireland.
The penalty points system was brought in to encourage safe driving and reduce accidents on the roads, and insurance companies may view drivers as a higher risk, especially if they have had repeat offences.
Penalty points can be picked up for speeding, driving without due care, using a mobile phone, driving through a red light or for not maintaining your car properly. Whatever the reason for your points, Paddy Compare can find the best deals for car insurance or convicted driver insurance from specialist insurance companies across Ireland.
If you are fortunate enough to not have any penalty points, and your licence is clean, Paddy will also pass this information on to insurers, who will be able to give you a quote on that basis. Simply visit the car insurance page today to get started with a one-page form!
