Ryanair to reduce stakes in Aer Lingus – Compare travel insurance!

Ryanair’s Chief Executive Michael O’Leary received a negative result from the UK Competition Commission (UKCC) today as he was told to reduce his minority 29.8% stake in Aer Lingus to 5%. The UKCC claimed that such a stake in Aer Lingus had led or may be expected to lead to a substantial lessening of competition on routes between the UK and Ireland. Michael had been expecting this result but said in a statement that he plans to challenge the commission’s decision. On the other hand, Aer Lingus’ Chairman Colm Barrington welcomed the outcome as he said it was unacceptable that the airline’s main competitor was allowed to remain on it’s share register.

Whether you plan to fly Aer Lingus or Ryanair, finding the right travel insurance is a must. At Paddy Compare you can compare travel insurance in Ireland with just one form. Ryanair set for travel takeover?

Ryanair is in the process of trying to convince the European Commission that a €694 million takeover of Aer Lingus would not lead to a monopoly of the Irish airline market.

The acquisition of Aer Lingus has long been seen as a personal ambition of O’Leary’s, topping his transformation of a one-plane airline in 1985, into one of Europe’s largest with over 300.

Aer Lingus currently operates 45 aircraft.

The deal would see Flybe taking charge of 43 Ryanair routes, and the newly created Flybe Ireland would operate from bases in Dublin and Cork.

Thousands of passengers each day make use of air travel between major airports in Dublin, Cork, Kerry, Galway, Sligo and Waterford, and onwards to the UK and beyond.

Paddy Compare offers travel insurance for all types of travel. Carefully selected products can provide a cost effective way of ensuring that you will be covered for all of your holiday, business and personal travel needs.
