6000 homes without power as Storm Eva hits Ireland

Winter 2015 has been a difficult one for many families, with widespread flooding and disruption throughout the country.

Many homeowners hoped the worst had passed following the clear-up operation in the wake of Storm Desmond. Cork, Kerry, Galway and Sligo were the worst affected counties, with millions of euro worth of damage.

Power lines have yet again been damaged, following the 120kph winds experienced during Storm Desmond, with Meath, Dublin, Cavan Wexford, Cork and Tipperary all affected. While conditions will remain blustery for a while today, Met Éireann believes Storm Eva is likely to clear by this afternoon, and Santa’s travels around Ireland won’t be affected.

White Christmas?

Christmas Day is expected to start off cool, bright and sunny in many areas. However, wet and windy weather will develop in the southwest by around noon, spreading across the country.

Daytime temperatures will be cool on 25 December – as low as 5 degrees: but not cold enough for snow in the cities. High laying areas in the West may see some sleet in the morning, but with temperatures rising to 12 or 13 degrees in the afternoon, this will not last long.

Aer Lingus to be sold for €1.4bn

The board of Aer Lingus accepted an offer of €1.4bn for the airline yesterday. The likely buyer is IAG, the owner of British Airways, but will be subject to approval of the shareholders and the regulators. IAG is headed by former Aer Lingus boss Willie Walsh and is a significant addition to the airline giant.

Aer Lingus said it was accepting a higher offer of €2.55 per share including a cash dividend following a number of attempts by IAG to buy Aer Lingus. This is the third offer by IAG, up from €2.40 earlier this month. Major shareholders in the firm include Ryanair (30%) and the Irish Government (25%), and both have a power of veto.

Senior executives at Aer Lingus are to set to earn about €30m from their bonus share scheme from the sale.
